Department of Educational Studies

The Department of Educational Studies at the Institute of Educational Studies is responsible for the Pedagogy BA and Education sciences MA degree programs. In the Bachelor study program, students learn about educational processes, educational institutions and the professional system of pedagogical services in theory and practice as well. Master students are prepared for undertaking researcher and employee duties both in compulsory and higher education, thus they are trained as future professionals capable of solving R&D tasks and disseminating Hungarian educational issues to both Hungarian and international professional forums.

Besides disciplinary training, we undertake a major role in teacher training to enrich students’ pedagogical culture, social intelligence. Moreover, we support talented students and aspire them to engage in different research projects.

Within the Department of Pedagogy we work in three divisions:

  • Division of Didactics: offers courses and studies mainly the theory and practice of the teaching profession, system-level understanding of education, modern instruction methods, electronic learning environments and digital technology.
  • Division of Theoretical and Historical Education Studies: studies, interprets and compares different historical trends in educational philosophy and theory to present tendencies to widen students’ knowledge in the history of education.
  • Division of Social Pedagogy: studies and interprets the social dimensions of education, educational processes, outcomes, the relation of social contexts and social phenomena to develop students’ social awareness and social competence.  

The Department of Educational Studies covers a broad and comprehensive range of research topics, for example: school bullying, digital pedagogy, the history of teacher training in Debrecen, the history of girls’ and denominational education, the sociology of education of religious and national minorities, academic integrity, higher education policy, curriculum integration, research on reading habits and child protection in compulsory education. Our research projects are either individually supported or are implemented in international cooperation.
